We are a group of Daviess County residents who believe in open access to information. The recent push to ban books in libraries is troubling. Our mission is to educate the community about the dangers of censorship and to fight for intellectual freedom.
- Freedom of Speech and Access to Information: Libraries are cornerstones of a free society. Banning books restricts access to information and stifles open discourse, a core principle of a healthy democracy.
- Reader's Choice: Parents and guardians have the right to decide what their children read. Libraries offer a variety of materials, and patrons can choose what best suits their needs and interests.
- Exposure to Diverse Voices: Libraries provide a platform for diverse perspectives and experiences. Banning books often targets marginalized voices, limiting understanding and empathy.
- Censorship is a Slippery Slope: Today's banned book might be tomorrow's classic. Banning sets a dangerous precedent and opens the door for further censorship.
- Challenges Spark Curiosity: Banned books often become more sought-after. Banning can backfire, attracting unwanted attention and sparking reader curiosity.
- Focus on Education, Not Restriction: Libraries should be places of learning and critical thinking. Librarians can help patrons navigate challenging topics instead of removing them entirely.
